If you are still asking the web developer to buy a domain, register the domain name “in your name.” Exceptions to this include when you have given them a business name. Even in this case ensure that someone from the company to be represented as a point of contact. The domain must be legally belonging to you also if the technical or administrative contact is rested with the developers.

In most cases, the person looking for a domain name has very little knowledge about the technical aspects or the intricacies of the agreement. Often web developers can hold the site hostage and make unjust demands. If the domain is registered in your name, you can retrieve it quite quickly by making a request with the registrar and providing your valid ID proof.
